A microtonal soundtrack to Heinz Emigholz's feature Berlin [Underground]

The film depicts 171 notebooks of the director, nine subway stations of Berlin, two perfume ads, and 67 trees in Buenos Aires.

Heinz asked for music in the notebook scenes.

In the film the notebooks are presented in chronological order, and come in 8 different sizes. If notebooks of the same size follow each other (on the chronological timeline) they are bundled into one scene. Therefore 171 individual notebooks became 66 notebook scenes. In an overview sketch Heinz gave each notebook size its distinct colour.

For the soundtrack we decided to work in just intonation to create an individual scale for each notebook size. So there are 8 different scales in the score, plus an additional one for the two perfume scenes. We wrote 9 songs and fitted them in the corresponding scenes, creating variations by subtracting or adding elements.

As Heinz also asked for a percussive discoey sound, the microtonality in some of the tracks is more of a shadowing nature.

The name labeling convention of the tracks refers to Heinz colour scheme. The numbers indicate the position in the movie.

For the soundtrack album we selected 47 out of the total of 68 tracks (66 notebook scenes plus 2 perfume scenes)
